Marvelous Ideal

Marvelous Ideal was one of the first Morgan stallions I found when I got into Morgans. I kept seeing many photos of beautiful Morgans horses, and when I looked at the captions, they were always sired by Marvelous Ideal. Who was this stallion, I wondered, as he sure could stamp a foal! I located Marvelous Ideal and Ellie Mason with her Marvelous Morgans in Arizona. In 1993, I hauled two mares, from California to Arizona, to breed to him. But, as luck would have it, he was done siring foals. The next best thing would be breeding to a son of Ideal. I ended up breeding to Cameo's Atari. I also bought one of Arti's daughter, Alves Surprize. Thank you Barbara Alves, owner of Arti and breeder of Alves Morgans.

I did manage to purchase two of Ideal's daughter's. I bought the 1992 mare Tov Cristina Caminos who was Ideal's very last foal.Cristina was a favorite of mine and now I have her two daughters by Starbuck, Ashley and Bianca. I also bought the Ideal daughter Tov Annie M Ashmore from my good friend Betty Carnahan of Summer Snow Morgans. Thanks Betty :). Thank you also to Carol Dzindzio, Twin Oaks Valley Morgans for her foresight to breed her mares to Marvelous Ideal. I also own a few Ideal granddaughters. They are Baymount's Ashley, Baymount's Bianca, Baymount's Bonnie Blue, Marble Mtn Splendor and Alves Surprize.

In the spring of 2000, when we purchased Blacksaddle Starbuck, I thought he looked much like the horses that Ellie Mason bred under her prefix Marvelous Morgans, but Starbuck was golden buckskin and not bay like most of Ellie's horses. Starbuck has a similar look to her bloodlines and lo and behold after looking at his papers he was a Marvelous Ideal grandson! Boy, is that blood strong! Unintentionally, I had happened into a line breeding program of the Marvelous Ideal bloodlines. What great luck this turned out to be for my breeding program.

The genetics books will tell you to take the sire back to the best lines in his dams side. This is what I was doing by taking Blacksaddle Starbuck back to his daughters and granddaughters. The books also say by crossing either a grandson of a particular stallion to a daughter of the same stallion you can fix certain traits and make a superior foal. You can also do this in reverse by crossing a son to a granddaughter.Ellie was kind enough to lease me her Marvelous Ideal son, Marvelous Intrigue, in 2007 and 2008. I crossed Intrigue on 11 of my mares, several who were Marvelous Ideal granddaughters. This was a son of Ideal to granddaughter cross. This is what horseman call the golden cross and the foals sure reflect that this is true.

As luck should have it again, I am very fortunate to be able to lease a Marvelous Ideal grandson. He is palomino son of Marvelous Intrigue, Rdk's Oregon Rising Son aka Trigger. This is Intrigue's only colored offspring so far, although we are hoping for either a buckskin or palomino son or daughter this spring out of one of our buckskin daughter's of Starbuck.Janene Ayers is Triggers breeder. Janene was one of the first people I met when I got into Morgans. I was looking for Marvelous Ideal bloodlines and Janene owned Rdk's Shilo who is an Ideal son. Janene too is a big fan of these Marvelous Ideal bloodlines. I am fortunate to have one of Shilo's daughters, Marble Mtn Splendor. Thank you Janene for entrusting us with your golden boy - Trigger!

As you can tell we are in love with these Marvelous Ideal bloodlines. They are beautiful, intelligent, athletic and friendly horses. We thought it fitting to honor Marvelous Ideal with his own page on our website since he has been part of the foundation of our breeding program. These bloodlines are unique and we are also a unique breeding program concentrating on carrying on these lines. We are very blessed and thank you to everyone who has helped get us to this point. We hope you enjoy Ideals photos and can see how his bloodlines are carrying on in our Baymount Morgans.

Ellie Mason is the breeder of Marvelous Ideal. He was foaled on January 2, 1975 at Marvelous Morgans in Gilbert, Arizona. He was 3 weeks early and was a beauty with a broad short head and the tiniest ears. Ideal was a cross between a Dyberry Ethan grandson to a Dyberry Ethan daughter. This is a tried and true way to cross horses that is recognized by horse breeders as a way to intensify breeding strengths. Dyberry Ethan had great beauty and it came through to Ideal with this cross. Ethan was also the son of the well known Lippitt Miss Nekomia.

When Ideal was only four days old, the weather turned cold and Ellie almost lost him. It dropped to 16 degrees and he wasn't nursing.She put a baby blanket on him and hung a heat lamp. She stayed up with him all night until she was sure he was nursing good every twenty minutes.

Ideal was always a quiet horse to take any place. He would hop right into the trailer alongside any horse and nothing seemed to spook him. When he was two, Ellie climbed on him and started to ride him. She just climbed on board and it didn't seem to bother him. It wasn't until he was twelve years old that Ellie took him to open shows. She usually rode him Western but he had a big trot and carried his head so well that she decided to try him English.In fifteen classes, he won twelve firsts, two seconds and one fourth. His fourth was in a class of all huntseat riders and Ideal was saddleseat and the judge though he had two much action!

Ellie bred Ideal to two mares at age two as she was anxious to test him out. The next spring when the foals came, she knew they had a strong breeding stallion. He was very easy to handle for breeding. Ideal was such a consistent breeder that Ellie could predict what type of foal a mare would have when bred to him. Ideal was homozygous bay and all his foals were bay, brown or black.

Ideal was a great ambassador for the Morgan breed because of his great beauty and wonderful manners. Farriers would recommend to their clients to breed to him because his offspring had such great legs and feet. The Farnam Company used Ideal in an advertisement for LazerSheen.

Ideal sired 115 foals, 23 stallions, 60 mares and 32 geldings. He died at the age of 26 of colic in the year 2001. Ellie now resides in Oregon and stands the wonderful son of Marvelous Ideal, Marvelous Intrigue. Intrigue has already sired 54 foals and is turning out to be just as great a sire as Ideal.  These Marvelous bloodlines are very strong and you will see a distinct look when you find them in the pedigree of Morgans of today.
